CV Writing Tips

General Tips

Employers often scan CVs in a matter of seconds
Employers recruiting without help from a consultancy may only take a matter of seconds to scan your details to see if they want to take your application further so here are some hot tips to get you noticed:

Chronological order
Always put your details in chronological order, starting with your most recent experience (employers want to know about your last 10 years of employment ideally). Education and more personal information should go at the end.

No gaps
Dates on CVs should include the month and year because any gap may arouse suspicion and it is never good to leave people guessing.

Focus on relevant core skills
Ensure your CV focuses on your strengths and experiences and the core skills you can offer a company which are relevant for the job you are applying to.

Lay out
Ensure you use short paragraphs, lots of white space, consistent subject titles and font (never all capital letters) and use a laser printer. Get someone to read your CV for typos. Use bullet points and never use type smaller than ‘12’.

Two pages only
CVs that go over two pages can only add to the stress of recruiting and can be a real turn off for the busy HR recruiter, even though you may be proud of your six page career history.

Don’t give hobbies
Never put down hobbies that you cannot explain or give examples of. At worst, hobbies could cause your application to be rejected.

Up-to-date
Always keep your CV up to date with your latest experience and any changes to your personal contact details such as mobile phone number or address.
